The everyday stuff

These are the decisions the guide is actually for. Where to eat. Who cuts hair right. Where the kids train. Which counter you walk out of happy.

What this is

A guide for people without local knowledge

Everybody who lives here already knows who the good plumber is. The people who don't are the family staying a week in Gatlinburg, the couple who just bought a house in Blount County, and the retirees who moved to the lake from three states away.

Maryville & Blount County

Blount County grows entirely because people move in. The ballot here doesn't ask for your favorite — it asks which business you'd recommend to a neighbor who just moved to town. Weighted toward home services, trades and health care, because that's what a new homeowner actually has to hire.

Gatlinburg

Millions of visitors arrive every year and decide where to eat from a brochure rack — which is pure paid placement with no signal in it at all. Here, the visitors themselves do the ranking, voting across the whole season while the memory is fresh.

Lenoir City & Tellico Village

Loudon County had more deaths than births last year and grew anyway, because about 1,200 more people moved in than left. A lake community at a $98,214 median income shops the same main street as a town at $60,480, so this ballot carries its own lake-and-marine section.

How it works

Four phases, once a year

Registering costs nothing and commits you to nothing. It puts you on the list so you don't miss nominations.

Phase one

Register

Free. Tell us who you are and what category you belong in, so your business is on the ballot when nominations open.

Phase two

Nominations

Open write-in. Anyone can nominate any business. The top five in each category become finalists.

Phase three

Voting

Finalists only. One verified vote per person per category — not once a day. Finalist order is randomized on every ballot.

Phase four

Winners

Winners are announced, badged, and printed in an edition that gets distributed around town all year.

Our pledge

You cannot buy a ranking here

  • Rankings are earned, never sold. No amount of advertising moves a business up a list or onto a badge.
  • Ballot order is randomized for every visitor, on every page load. Paying for an enhanced listing does not put you higher on the ballot — we deliberately don't sell that, even though it's standard in this industry.
  • Advertising is labeled "Ad." Not "sponsored," not "featured," not "promoted." If someone paid for it, it says so plainly.
  • Vote totals stay private and incentivized voting is disqualifying. You may ask your customers to vote. You may not give them anything for doing it.
  • Regulated fields aren't put to a popularity vote. Attorneys, medical and financial practices appear as verified listings with license status and tenure instead.
